I’ve looked, read about, browse reviews, and read. PDF Manuals of 15-20 Types/Brands of OBDII Scanners/Readers, and even purchased one which worked great--but did not connect via BlueTooth (BT) to my iOS Device’s (iPad/iPhone). I liked the idea of a Stand-Alone, Plug-In unit to take with me to read my buddy’s cars/trucks and found one that did this in another brand's model. It also was a BT reader which expanded its capabilities significantly; however, it would not connect to either iPhone SE or iPad Air.
Wanting a Scan Tool that I could use for more than just reading and clearing codes, I seriously was considering spending the money to purchase a truly useful tool and settled in on the Autel MK808BT Tablet Scan Tool at $499.00. But it just wasn’t in my budget at this time to plop down $500 for a truly decent tool--as compared to $1000-1500 for Bi-Directional functions. So, I waited and saved up some cash, then lo-and-behold the Autel AP200 became available.
Verified-Purchase -- I’ve already scanned/fixed a friend’s 5.3L Silverado, my Son’s 1.9L Saturn, and of course my own truck 5.9L Ram. I have to say that if you are looking for a scan tool that does work with the iOS Operating Sys, give this one a try..!

Answer... Depending on whether or not you actually download your specific Auto/Truck Software determines how deeply you can delve into your vehicle's diagnostics.
Personally owning 1998 Ram, I downloaded the 1st-one-free software package for Dodge and was able to access not only the ABS codes but the awesome Autel AP200 even scanned my instrument cluster and my factory radio--just to name a few. So depending on what your manufacture allows you to access and or look at will depend on whether or not you will be able to reprogram modules.
As far as clearing codes and identifying what needs to be repaired… This thing is awesome!

After my 2-year-old scan tool was ruled obsolete I bought this one since it will get new updates continuously and offers brand specific features I was able to save 300 dollars by programming my Hyundai Santa Fe’s keyfob myself with this device!! This tiny little gadget is great value for money. This is a Bluetooth dongle that connects to your car's ODB2 diagnostic port and communicates with the MaxiAP200 smartphone app provided by the device manufacturer (Autel). Compared to vanilla $10 ELM327 Bluetooth dongles that communicate with generic smartphone diagnostic apps (like the excellent Torque app), this device provides enhanced car-specific diagnostics as well as some nifty services like key programming (for select vehicles).

I bought my car with a plethora of lights illuminated on the dash (I know, dumb) but I'm a pretty good mechanic and had a good idea of what was causing each of the lights but without knowing the exact trouble code, I wasn't going to just start replacing parts willy-nilly. Now I've had Bluetooth OBD scanners in the past, but they were only capable of the most simple features such as read and erase codes. Not to mention they didn't have their own app, just some generic app. Here's where the autel Bluetooth scanner stands apart. It has its own app, full of useful features! I was able to identify what airbags were disconnected, see that the steering angle sensor was faulty, find what Tom's sensor was bad, along with seeing old codes that have since been repaired. I also really appreciate that I can leave the scanner plugged in and don't have to bother with cables and navigating difficult to use menus. I highly recommend this scanner.

When buying additional vehicle diagnostic, Does vehicle specific software mean make e.g toyota or toyota highlander?

Bought from Amazon at a higher price, unfortunately! Took a while to pair with IOS Bluetooth, but then great functionality once working.

IT works, the bar thing its that you hace to pay for all the car brands, Luke toyota,honda, etc
